Opening 6-4

Hi there

I just bought the Robertie's "501 essential problems" and I find it really good for a beginner/intermediate player such I am
Though, I do not agree with some moves Robertie proposes for the openings, specially for the 6-4
He says that building the 2 point is not as good as 24/18 13/9, although gnuBG says it is.
I agree that the Robertie's move seems, from a human side, more flexible and "prettier" than building the 2pt but a -0'021 equity on 3-ply makes me wonder if it is really better.
I have not done yet a rollout (I'll do it) but I would like you to tell me your thoughts on this opening move.

When playing a weaker player I allways play 24/18, 13/9, otherwise 8/2, 6/2 (24/14 if GS game).

There have been extensive rollouts and studies about opening moves since Robertie wrote his book. There are several moves, including 6-4, which can be played several ways. Which move is better depends on the score of the match, but they are all close.

The latest rollouts for money games show that either coming out and splitting or making the 2 point is fine...they are extremely close. If you are trying to prevent gammons (certain match scores) it is best to simply run the checker all the way from the 24 point. If you really need to win a gammon, making the 2 point leads to more blitzes.

Other opening rolls that change depending on score are 3-2, 4-3 and 6-3.
