Paul Tanenbaum returns to the BGBB center stage, this time accompanied by Patti Beadles in her finals debut. Ron Karr, our stalwart analyst, recognized a host of pivotal checker plays and cube decisions throughout their championship match, and relates them to us in a unique quiz style.

This is a series of problems taken chronologically from the entire match. For each of the next 34 weeks, a new problem and its candidate plays will be presented. The number of the current week's problem will be magnified in the selection box above, to make it easy to find. The following week, Ron (and JellyFish) will examine the position and explain the reasoning behind what makes the best play or the correct cube decision. The in-depth analysis will give intermediate-to-advanced backgammon students 34 new tricks to add to their banks of knowledge.

The problem set has been constructed to emulate actual tournament play decisions. For example, the pip counts aren't displayed because they wouldn't be at the table. (They will be shown with the analysis, of course.) Your participation in evaluating the possibilities will be most rewarded if you do so without computer devices -- just as you would do at the table.

In each problem, the candidate plays are presented (but not in order of preference). If your browser supports JavaScript, moving your computer mouse over each candidate play will cause the checkers to display the move, so you can evaluate the resulting positions visually. Make your best move, and come back in a week to see Ron's analysis and a new problem.

Best of all, the quiz is self-scoring: Give yourself 5 points for each correct answer, fewer for less correct answers (you decide -- we're not keeping track!).

The match was recorded on tape and transcribed by Richard McIntosh.

Rollouts were made by Richard McIntosh, using JellyFish Analyzer 3.0. Rollout results show equities for the player on move. Candidate plays were better than or within 0.100 equity of the actual plays, evaluated at level 7.

Parameter values for rollouts on checker plays were:

Standard deviations of equity estimates were between 0.003 and 0.007, generally 0.005.

Parameter values for level 5 rollouts on cube decisions were:

Parameter values for level 6 rollouts on cube decisions were:
